Clinical Leadership Program Graduation

23 February 2017

Three project officers from some of the Clinical Excellence Commission’s key health improvement programs were among a group of more than 30 senior clinicians to graduate the CEC's Executive Clinical Leadership Program on Thursday, 23 February 2017.

Blood Watch’s Angie Dalli, Medication Safety and Quality's Selvana Awad and Sepsis Program's Lisa Coombs each developed improvement programs related to their work within the CEC and with clinicians across the NSW public health system.

CEC Chief Executive, Ms Carrie Marr, said the program attracted senior clinicians from across NSW and she was extremely proud to see three CEC staff among the graduates.

"These graduates are the clinical leaders who will guide the health system over the next decade," Ms Marr said.

"They come to the program with the support of the executive and a desire to achieve improvements in how they, and their colleagues, care for patients. Effective leadership helps create an environment in which excellence in clinical care will flourish."

As part of the course, each graduate identifies an area where they feel improvements could be achieved and presents a clinical improvement project as part of their final work. Ms Marr said the most recent graduates produced an extensive range of improvement work.

Through the program, participants gain enhanced:

  • understanding of the workings of NSW Health
  • knowledge of contemporary approaches to patient safety and clinical quality systems
  • skills in relation to communication, conflict resolution and team leadership
  • ability to influence the direction of health policy, and
  • personal and professional clinical leadership skills.

The Clinical Leadership Program is part of the CEC's Quality Improvement Academy, which has been established to design and deliver a range of education programs for staff working in patient safety, improvement and clinical governance.
