AMS Implementation Toolkit

There is an insurmountable body of evidence demonstrating that hospital antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) programs can both optimise the treatment of infections and reduce adverse events associated with antimicrobial use. These programs help clinicians improve the quality of patient care and improve patient safety through increased infection cure rates, reduced treatment failures, and increased frequency of correct prescribing for treatment and prophylaxis.

Recognising the urgent need to improve antibiotic use in hospitals and the benefits of AMS programs, the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care made AMS programs a mandatory requirement for hospital accreditation.

Together with a multi-disciplinary expert advisory committee, the Clinical Excellence Commission has developed resources to support implementation of hospital antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) programs. These resources embody the core elements required for successful program implementation and maintenance, and facilitate identification of gaps in already established AMS programs.
