Medicine ingredient names

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is changing some medicine ingredient names used in Australia to align with the names used internationally. Some name changes are significant while others are minor. The changes will occur gradually over a transition period from April 2016 to April 2020. Further information is available from the Therapeutic Goods Administration.

A Safety Notice 001/16 Changes to Medicine Ingredient Names has been prepared to advise health services and clinicians of these medicine ingredient name changes and actions required to minimise the risk of medication error associated with these changes.

Supporting materials including a poster and an abridged list of changing medicine names have been developed to assist with raising awareness of the medicine ingredient name changes.
