Patients' Perspectives

Patient stories are very powerful resources that help health care staff understand what was good, what was bad and what could have made the experience more positive.

Everyone has a different and equally valuable perception of their health care experience. An individual story is not in itself representative of all patient experiences. However, each story is valid as is the individual’s health care experience. Collectively, stories can help build a picture of what it is like as a service user and how the service could be improved.

Stories are told from the point of view of the narrator and the attention focuses on the individual and not the organisation/condition. The narrative is a powerful tool to allow clinicians and health care professionals to better understand what is important to a patient, which contributes to improving the patient experience and the safety and quality of care.
