Executive Clinical Leadership Program

The Executive Clinical Leadership Program runs over a twelve-month cycle, delivered as six intensive two-day modules (12 days in total). The course size is approximately 45 participants, and all workshops use contemporary adult learning methods.

Participants are expected to undertake an improvement project which is related to a process or clinical service in which challenges have been identified, and a final oral presentation is a requirement of the course. This presentation is assessed by the CEC executives, CEC Board members, key executives and/or quality managers from the local health districts.

As a part of the program participants will undertake a 360 degree review, using a recognised online assessment focusing on leadership competencies. Feedback and coaching is provided in relation to personal development plans.

It is recognised that participants are likely to be leaders in a range of professional and community organisations and extremely busy. For this reason the program delivery will be as flexible as possible. There will be minimal pre-workshop reading to undertake and the improvement project can be tailored to fit within the participants’ work schedule.

Learning objectives

The program aims to:

  • enhance knowledge of contemporary approaches in relation to patient safety and clinical quality systems
  • enhance the skills of clinicians in relation to communication, conflict resolution and team leadership within an environment of health care resource limitation

  • develop the knowledge of clinicians about the workings of NSW Health.

It builds capability in:

  • knowledge of improvement science
  • thinking creatively and innovatively
  • communicating effectively
  • working collaboratively
  • committing to customer service
  • thinking and solving problems
  • delivering results
  • managing and developing people
  • inspiring direction and purpose
