Education

On this page you will find education resources to support engagement with the program and develop awareness, knowledge, and skills for the BTF program. It is highly recommended that local case scenarios and data are used to promote clinician engagement with any training.

Education strategy

The CEC's Deteriorating Patient Education Strategy outlines the minimum training requirements for clinicians who provide direct patient care and aligns with NSW Health Policy Directive Recognition and management of patients who are deteriorating (PD2020_18).

BTF education is the mandatory deteriorating patient learning pathway for all staff in NSW Health and requirements vary for clinical and non-clinical roles. Perinatal Safety Education (PSE) is the mandatory deteriorating patient learning pathway for midwives, obstetricians and obstetric trainees; it includes relevant BTF requirements.

The education is structured in three tiers and delivered in a combination of eLearning modules and face-to-face workshops.

  • Tier 1 (BTF) is mandatory for all NSW Health staff and students and provides awareness of the BTF program, standard observation charts and direction on how to escalate care.
  • Tier 2 (BTF and PSE) are mandatory for all clinical staff providing direct patient care and is focused on increasing deteriorating patient knowledge and application of human factors, including teamwork and communication.
  • Tier 3 education is for staff who are responsible for the provision of the BTF Rapid Response as an individual or as a member of a Rapid Response Team.

Face-to-face workshops and team training are coordinated by the LHDs and SHNs. Contact your local deteriorating patient lead for information.

eLearning

The learning pathways and eLearning modules for NSW Health staff are available through My Health Learning. There is no equivalency or recognition of prior learning for the eLearning modules and they are a pre-requisite to attend face-to-face training.

BTF education is being updated in partnership with the Health Education Training Institute (HETI) and subject matter experts from the LHDs and SHNs. Further information will be provided here when available.
