Ian Richards

Principal Lead, Safety System Capability

Bachelor of Physiotherapy

Ian works with executive and clinical leadership teams across NSW to enhance strategic, collective leadership and resource alignment towards the capability of their safety systems.

Ian originally worked as a Physiotherapist, with a passion for Stroke Rehabilitation. With an energy to understand and improve complex systems, he moved to a state-wide Clinical Redesign role in 2007. Over the last 15 years, Ian has worked in partnership with metropolitan and rural health services on local and state-wide system improvement initiatives.

Two core beliefs drive Ian's approach to work every day, that:

  1. The role of a leader is to make it easier for other people to be successful, and;
  2. People are the most valuable resource and greatest lever in our safety system.

The integration of these two beliefs and his experience in complex system improvement is what guides Ian's work to improve safety system capability.

Program Lead - Curriculum and Faculty Development

RN, MaEd, Grad Dip Clin Teaching, Dip Leadership and Management, Cert IV Workplace Coaching, ICU Nursing Cert

As Curriculum and Faculty Development Lead, Sonya supports the development of safety and quality curriculum related content and resources and supports safety and quality faculties both within the CEC and in local health entities.

Sonya is a Registered Nurse with over 30 years' experience in NSW Health. Her past roles include Improvement Advisor, Clinical Nurse Specialist in both Intensive Care and Community Aged Care, Clinical Nurse Educator for Community Palliative Care and Clinical Nurse Consultant for Surgery at St George Hospital. She has also been a Lecturer-in-Charge of several undergraduate units at the Australian Catholic University in Canberra.

Sonya has applied quality improvement methodologies to her own improvement projects in all these roles. This includes coaching staff at all levels to apply Improvement methods to achieve measurable outcomes for their patients and teams.

Sonya is passionate about supporting the wonderful staff of NSW Health in their development and in their application of patient safety and quality improvement methods and skills. She has more than 15 years' experience in clinical leadership development, facilitation and coaching.

Safety and Quality Essentials Pathway Implementation Partner

B. App. Sci. (Physiotherapy), M. Public Health

Gen supports entities across NSW in implementing the Safety and Quality Essentials Pathway program in their local context.

Gen originally worked as a Physiotherapist and led clinical quality improvement projects that dramatically reduced waiting times for outpatient Physiotherapy. She then moved into Project Officer roles in health system improvement, including creating innovative models of care to improve access to clinics, and designing communications, program evaluation, and stakeholder engagement for a data linkage project to promote evidence-driven improvements.

Gen's highlights across her roles have always been using improvement science to run simple projects that improve patient care and staff experiences, and mentoring others in quality improvement work. She is excited about the potential of the Pathways program to empower staff at all levels to make an improvement in what they do.

 Jacqueline Hampton

Jacqueline Hampton

Program Lead – Safety and Improvement Programs

Bachelor of Science in Dietetics, Post Graduate Diploma in Redesign, Accredited facilitator in the Accelerating Implementation Methodology; Certified IHI Improvement Advisor.

Jacqueline Hampton started her career in health as a Dietitian over 22 years ago, with the first 15 years as a clinician. As a Senior Oncology Dietitian, she involved herself in the development and delivery of several Interdisciplinary Care Models.

This steered her career towards Quality Development as she took on a District position within the Clinical Governance Unit. Part of her portfolio involved patient safety and quality capability programs. She led the Leading Better Value Program across the District; whilst also acting as the manager for the local Program and Redesign team.

Jacquie's passion for health improvement, is an intrinsic motivator to further develop teams and individuals to be Safety and Quality Leaders. The key to ensure safe and quality care for all our patients all the time.

Project Officer – Governance, Education & Quality Assurance

Certificate IV in Training and Assessment

As Project Officer, Mel enjoys supporting and partnering with entities in implementing the Safety & Quality Essentials Pathway.

Mel is an experienced coordinator and facilitator and has worked in the arts, education and health sectors. Within NSW Health she has held various roles working with clinicians, administration and education staff.

Mel has held a number of facilitator roles, focusing on delivering programs to improve the software, hardware and computer skills and knowledge of adult and young adult learners. In the growing digital world, Mel continues to develop and share resources that support capability development and understanding in systems and platforms.

Mel holds a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40116) and a Master of Arts - Contemporary Arts.

She's had the pleasure of exhibiting her digital artworks locally and interstate. With a growth mindset, she now focusses on honing the skills of watercolour painting and photography.
